Learn the rules of Sokoban

Sokoban gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Practice with a purpose

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your objective

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Start with a deliberate move.

How to proceed

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

How to interact with the game

Arrow keys or direction buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

See the idea in action

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

One detail worth checking

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
